What is an Area Agency on Aging?

March 10, 2020

On our most recent episode of Caregiver Crossing the Podcast, we sat down with Mindi Winnie, Community Programs Coordinator for CICOA, Indiana’s largest Area Agency on Aging (AAA), covering Marion County and the seven surrounding “donut” counties. We talk about what exactly IS an Area Agency on Aging, how they serve our community of aging adults and caregivers, and why you should absolutely utilize this amazing resource.

What is an Area Agency on Aging?  Area Agencies on Aging provide case management, information and referrals to various services for persons who are aging or developmentally disabled.  There are 16 agencies in the state of Indiana, with CICOA being the largest and covering Marion County plus the seven surrounding counties.

Started in 1974, CICOA is a not-for-profit agency that helps seniors and people of any age with a disability remain comfortably and safely at home and out of institutional care. They do this by connecting families and individuals with services like meal delivery, transportation, support, and referrals to places like Joy’s House, where our mission of keeping families together longer and providing caregiver support aligns with CICOA’s goals for our community.

How can you get in touch with CICOA? Visit cicoa.org for more information about all the services and support they provide, or call 800-432-2422 to be connected for a consultation. You can also download CICOA’s solutions guide here.
