July 2021 Email Newsletter Last Chance: RSVP for the Joy of the Journey Brunch TODAY! Remember to RSVP today! The brunch is free to attend and includes a short presentation with an opportunity to give. This year the event will be both in-person and virtual with your safety in mind. Questions? Contact Hannah Oosterlinck. A Note from Tina: The pandemic unfortunately acted as a case study for the services provided by Joy’s House. Throughout that time, the vast majority of our Guests (clients) declined at a greater rate than ever expected. They did this for a myriad of reasons – one of the biggest being lack of purpose, stimulation and community. This means that either their needs became so great that families were no longer able to care for them at home, they passed away, required full-time medical care or declined to a point where they were nearly unrecognizable once quarantine was lifted. It breaks our hearts that we saw a 70% drop in Guest attendance during the pandemic. When I say that it breaks our hearts, I mean it with everything I have.
The word “caregiver” wasn’t so common a year ago. It is now. People understand what it means to be a family member or friend who acts as not only a loved one, but a cook, driver, nurse, hygienist, housekeeper, therapist, and so much more and how impossible it is to do this alone. Caregiving is beautiful – it is also hard and needs to be shared. And now, our community understands the pressures and stresses facing caregivers more than ever before. We also understand that we, at Joy’s House, need to change and grow the way that we support and educate caregivers on this side of the pandemic. We’ll be sharing more about this in the coming months.
The short of things is this – a lot of people need Joy’s House right now. If our adult day and caregiver services aren’t needed by you, I’m confident in saying that they’re needed by someone you know and love. Have them call us. We’re open and ready to bring new Guests and caregivers into our Joy’s House family and we’re prepared to walk this part of life with them.
Warmly ~ Tina Virtual Vacations Last week, Joy's House Guests took a virtual vacation to Honolulu, Hawaii. And it was a wonderful experience! Guests were able to enter the Joy's House Airlines and board the plane with their individual boarding passes (pictured below). The Garden Room was set up with the chairs in two rows and a center aisle for the JH Attendants to provide refreshments as we listened to the Captain (via a video on the big screen TV) prepare all passengers for the flight.
Everyone was given the preflight instructions, we buckled up, and took off. The flight was guided by Staff as we taxied down the runway, took off, and traveled to an island paradise. Staff and Guests, using their imaginations, discussed how their stomachs felt during take off and the view of the beautiful fluffy clouds and blue skies.
Once we landed in Honolulu travelers were presented with lovely, colored leis, fruity drinks, Hawaiian attire, coconuts, music and dancing!
The Guests got the opportunity to engage, laugh, use their imaginations and talk about the sites, sounds, and smells of Hawaii.
Stay tuned for our next big adventure! With Joy's House Airlines...the sky is the limit! Volunteer Opportunities Added! We are excited to announce the return of volunteer activities this summer that directly support the heart of our mission – our Guests!
